The city of Curicó, which belongs administratively to the province of Curicó -- part of the Region of Maule in Chile, has had a rich history since its inception. Citizens who live there are known as Curicanos, a word that derives from the Aboriginal Curis, who live in this geographical area of Chile. They belonged to an aboriginal group called Promaucaes. The Curis lived mainly in the area between the current river Teno in the north, and the river Huaiquillo in the south.

 

Administrative Summary

 

  • In 1700 the territory of Curicó extended from the river Teno through the north to Colchagua and from the river to the south of the Maule.
  • In 1743 the town of San Jose de Buena Vista Curicó was founded by Don Jose de Manso, on land donated by Don Lorenzo de Labra.
  • Under an order issued by Don Domingo Ortiz de Rozas on October 10, 1747,  the village plan was drawn in its current location on land donated by Mr. Pedro Barrales and his wife Dona Ana Mendez. Jose Clemente de Translaviña, judge of the Real Audiencia, ran with the delineation of the village and solar distribution, seconded by the neighbor Mr. Domingo Martinez Donoso.
  • On August 13, 1793, the village of Curicó was established, situated in the province of Santiago.
  • On August 30, 1826 Curicó was separated from the Santiago province and was named the capital of the fourth province of Chile, Colchagua.
  • On August 10, 1830 Curicó won the title of city and served as the capital of the province of Colchagua until 1840.
  • On August 26, 1865 was erected in the province the department of Curicó department.

Curicó (Mapudungun: kuru ko, 'black water' 'due to the color of nearby streams mixed with the soil') is the name of the city and capital of the Province of Curicó, which belongs to the Region of Maule in Chile's Central Valley. Bordered on the south with Molina and Sagrada Familia, Teno to the north, to the west with Rauco and east Romeral.

The province is located between the provinces of Colchagua and Talca and is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by Argentina.

The area of the city of Curicó is 1328 km2  and in 2005 the population was estimated at 125,500 inhabitants. The typical products of the city include cakes, fruit and wine of  international quality. The city is integrated with the communities of Hualañe, Licantén, Molina, Rauco, Romeral, Sagrada Familia, Teno and Vichuquén to form the Electoral District No. 36 and it belongs to the 10th Senatorial District.

The city was badly damaged in the earthquake in Chile in 2010.

Cerro Carlos Condell

The Cerro Condell is the highest natural point in the city with an altitude of 293 meters above sea level. Is a natural area that has different tree species, offering perspectives from throughout the natural and artificial overviews. It has many paths, accessible by foot, bicycle or car.

Alameda José Manso de Velasco

The grand boulevard  -- an emblematic place in the city of Curicó, it is one of the most important milestones along the Cerro Carlos Condell. It is located along the west side of the previously mentioned hill, and has a unique north-south orientation as opposed to the classic east to west orientation of most grand boulvards in Chilean cities.

Plaza de Armas de Curicó

Plaza de ArmasThe Plaza de Armas of Curico is the civic center of town. It is renowned for its large number of plant species, including the palm trees that line it. The square is lined with banks, the Municpal offices of Curicó, the Matriz Church, the Union Club and the Fernando Lazcano Girls' High School. Prior to the earthquake of February 27, the La Prensa newspaper and the Provincial Government of Curicó were also located off the main square.

Mercado Municipal

Mercado Municipal
A market dedicated to the trade of diverse products, the Mercado Municipal is located in the center of the city. It first opened on December 17, 1945. The building that currently houses the market, on the street Peña 821, was built in 1959. It currently has 69 stalls offering various types of products. The offices of the football club, Curicó Unido, are on the second floor near the side of the building closest to Rodriguez Street.

Radal 7 Tazas

The Radal 7 Tazas is a nature reserve that belongs to the province of Curicó and is located within the English Park with an area of 4138.24 hectares. Its exact location is 35 ° 24 ' and 35''30 south latitude and 70 º 49' and 71 ''03 'west longitude. Its altitude varies between 650 and 2,600 meters above sea level depending on the area where you are. The seven natural cups are sculpted by the waters of the Rio Claro from the black volcanic rock. A few meters from the reserve are the two waterfalls, Salto de la Leona and The Veil of the Bride.

Iglesia San Francisco de Curicó

Iglesia San Francisco
It was originally built in 1731 and belongs to the Franciscan order. After the founding of the city and because of damage from an earthquake, it was transferred to the place where the monastery stands today.
The building began in 1880. The church keeps "Lady of Velilla", brought to Chile by Manuel Díaz Fernández in 1734 and this is the only existing replica of the Shrine of Mata, Monte Agudo, taken from Spain in 1734.

Mirador cementos Bío-Bío

MiradorThe Mirador Cementos Bio-Bio is a viewpoint located in the Los Queñes. It has 7 pieces representing typical local scenes. It was built in 2004 by sculptor Sandra Santander and financed by the company Cementos Bio Bio who commissioned the work.

Huasca atrás

Huasca AtrásA sculpture that values the legacy of the Victoria (a horse drawn carriage) as a medium of transport and generator of local identity. Created by the artist Graciela Albridi Cifuentes in honor of the Victorias and their tradition, it is part of the set of works that make up Curicó, Museo Urbano.
"Huasca atrás" comes from the act of sending a lash back with a whip-like element called "huasca". This whipping was done to try to remove children that had riskily climbed on to the back of the carriage. The shout "huasca atrás" was shouted by bystanders to the driver when they they saw the situation occur.

Luis Cruz Martínez

Luis Cruz MartinezThis is the greatest project present on the Alameda, both in magnitude and dimension. It was sculpted by Guillermo Córdoba and was inaugurated in 1912 in the presence of retired General Estanislao del Canto, hero of the Pacific War intervention in the War of the Sierra. The inauguration was also attended by Deputy Arturo Alessandri Palma, who later became President of the Republic and the Deputy Luis Undurraga, both parliamentarians of the province of Curicó.

La Atajada

La AtajadaThis scullpture is a tribute to Don Ramon Moraga Cardemil, who was a seven time champion of the Rodeo. The work is made of green stone (Tunka) measures 4.50mts high, is located just outside the Rodeo Curicó. Work by Graciela Albridi.

Teatro Victoria

Teatro VictoriaFor 65 years the Teatro Victoria held countless plays, films and other various entertainment. The theater and its large trunk of memories are a symbol of local history. Currently you can where the the facilities were and the state of rebuilding process after 11 years of closure, returning to showcase the artistic history of the city.

Iglesia Matriz

Iglesia MatrizThe Catholic church was begun in 1750. the construction contract was celebrated by Father José de Maturana to the judge of the Audiencia and general portector Villa, José Clemente Traslaviña. For that contract was priest Maturana  obligated to build church for the amount of 2,500 pesos.
The work was finished in 1759, and is built of adobe with a length of 35 yards and a width of 9 yards.
In 1943, the parish priest Tulio Garces Rojas suppressed the 3 flank polygonal towers, built the tower central and covered the exposed brick facade facing the main entrance and the temple. Remained so until the earthquake of March 1985.

Iglesia del Carmen

Iglesia del CarmenThis Catholic church is located at the intersection of Calle Carmen and San Martin. It is the end point of the Procession of the Virgen del Carmen.
The present church of Santuario del Carmen is the oldest of Curicó, although the Franciscans arrived before the city, the construction of the church was standing before.
When the Claretian arrived in 1880 the temple was improved, because in the beginning it was like a long, windowless cellar. The first thing they did was to build windows and the barrel ceiling.
Without doubt the most sought details of the Sanctuary are polychrome style images (one in the altar, a Heart of Mary, next to Santa Teresa and San Jose the other), brought in 1880 from Barcelona thanks to the contributions of citizens and their interest in decorating the church so that it would be most popular in the city.
